When Should a Couple Start Therapy?

A lot of couples wonder whether their relationship problems are “serious enough” or “too far gone” for therapy. They may wait for a major crisis, such as a betrayal (emotional, financial, or sexual), talk of separation, or a complete breakdown in communication, before reaching out to a therapist.

But couples therapy does not have to be a last resort. In fact, it is often most helpful when a couple begins therapy early such as premarital or before resentment and disconnection has set in.

Couples therapy can provide a structured space to understand what is happening beneath recurring conflicts, communicate more effectively, and reconnect with the relationship both partners want to build.
